Ibson Dana Elcar wurde am 10. Oktober 1927 in Ferndale, Michigan, geboren. Bevor er jedoch die University of Michigan besuchte, diente in der Navi. In den 50er und 60er Jahren wirkte er in ein paar Off-Broadway-Produktionen mit.
1967 zog er nach Los Angeles, wo seine Film- und Fernsehkariere begann. Er spielte nicht nur in der Serie MacGyver mit sondern auch noch unzähligen anderen Produktionen.
1991 traf ihn ein schwerer Schicksalsschlag als er am Grünen Star erkrankte und erblindete. Seine Rolle, Peter Thornton, in MacGyver wurde seiner Behinderung entsprechend umgeschrieben. In Gastauftritten in "Law & Order" oder auch "Emergency Room" spielte er ebenfalls einen Blinden.
Elcar lebte mit seiner Frau und seinen beiden Kindern in Santa Paula, Kalifornien und führte dort eine kleine Theaterfirma.
